Reclaimed Stone Cobble FAQs
How are Reclaimed Street Cobble Stones installed?
How are Reclaimed Street Cobble Stones installed?
Installing Old Street Cobbles involves a combination of traditional craftsmanship and practical groundwork to ensure a stable, long-lasting finish. Here’s a step-by-step overview of how they are typically installed:
1. Excavation & Base Preparation
- Excavate the area to the required depth (usually 150–250mm depending on use).
- Lay a compacted sub-base using MOT Type 1 or crushed hardcore, typically 100–150mm thick.
- Compact thoroughly with a plate compactor to create a solid foundation.
2. Laying Bed
- A bedding layer of sharp sand, grit sand, or a mortar mix (often 4:1 sand to cement) is spread evenly to a thickness of around 30–50mm.
- For driveways or heavily trafficked areas, a wet or semi-dry mortar bed offers added strength.
3. Laying the Cobbles
- Cobbles are laid by hand, tapping each into place with a rubber mallet.
- A mix of sizes and shades can be used to create a natural, random pattern or coursed design, depending on preference.
- Regularly check levels and alignment using string lines and spirit levels.
4. Jointing
- Once laid, joints can be filled with a dry sand/cement mix or a specialist jointing compound.
- For a more traditional finish, a wet mortar slurry may be brushed into the joints.
5. Finishing
- After jointing, lightly wash down and brush the surface clean to polish the tops of the cobble setts and reveal the natural colours.
Note: Old Street Cobbles are uneven and naturally worn, so some variation in level is part of their charm. Skilled installation ensures functionality while retaining their rustic appearance. Always consult a professional for heavy-use areas like driveways.
