What base should I use to lay sandstone paving?
What base should I use to lay sandstone paving?
For a strong and lasting sandstone patio or pathway, you should lay it on a properly prepared base. The best practice is to start with a compacted layer of MOT Type 1 sub-base — a crushed limestone or granite aggregate approved by the Ministry of Transport.
This material compacts down to form a stable, load-bearing layer that helps prevent sinking or shifting over time. Here's how to build the base:
- Excavate the area to allow for a total build-up of around 200–250mm, depending on ground conditions.
- Lay 100–150mm of MOT Type 1, compacted in layers using a plate compactor.
- Add a mortar bed (typically 4:1 mix of sharp sand and cement) on top to support the sandstone slabs.
- Set each stone into the mortar and tap down gently with a rubber mallet, checking levels as you go.
- Finish by jointing with a suitable grout or pointing product.
This method ensures excellent drainage, prevents movement, and gives your paving project a professional finish built to last.
