How To Install Stone Cladding?

  • Preparation

Installing stone cladding may seem daunting, but with the right preparation and tools, it’s straightforward for both DIYers and professionals.

    Step 1: Prepare the Wall

Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Remove dust, grease, paint, or loose plaster. For porous walls, consider applying a primer or scratch coat to improve adhesion.

    Step 2: Plan Your Layout

Measure the wall and plan the arrangement of cladding pieces. Dry-lay stones on the floor to visualise the pattern. Decide on your joint spacing, usually 5 to 20mm.

  • Placing Stones

    Step 3: Apply Mortar Adhesive

Use a high-strength cladding adhesive with a notched trowel. Apply adhesive to the back of each stone and directly to the wall.

Step 4: Attach the Stone Cladding

Press each stone firmly into place. Check alignment regularly with a spirit level. Use spacers for uniform joint widths if needed.

Step 5: Cut Stones to Fit

For edges, corners, or around fixtures, cut stones using a tile cutter or angle grinder with diamond blade. Always wear safety goggles and gloves when cutting.

  • Grouting

    Step 6: Joint the gaps

Once the stones are set, fill the gaps with grout or mortar. Smooth the joints using a pointing tool for a clean finish.

    Step 7: Finishing & Sealing

Brush off any excess dust or mortar residue. Apply a stone sealer if recommended for your stone type to protect against moisture and stains.

Now you have a completed Stone Cladding wall that will last for a lifetime, with the authentic character and timeless appeal of traditional British Stone.
