Stone Slips
Looking for high-quality stone slips in the UK? Our natural stone slips provide the authentic appearance of traditional stone walling without the structural depth or weight of full stone blocks.
Precision-cut from genuine British natural stone, stone slips (also known as stone cladding slips) offer a practical and visually striking solution for both interior and exterior applications. Stone slips are thin sections of natural stone, typically cut to a depth of 20–40mm. They are designed to replicate the look of full stone wall construction while being fixed to an existing structural wall using specialist adhesive systems. Once installed and pointed, stone slips are virtually indistinguishable from traditional stone masonry.

How to Install Stone Slips
Installing stone slips can appear complex, but with correct preparation and the appropriate tools, it is a manageable process for both experienced DIY installers and professionals.
Step 1: Prepare the Substrate
Ensure the wall surface is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Remove any dust, grease, paint, loose plaster, or debris that may affect adhesion. Porous or highly absorbent surfaces may require a suitable primer or scratch coat to improve bonding performance.
Step 2: Plan the Layout
Carefully measure the area and plan the layout before fixing begins. It is advisable to dry-lay the stone pieces on the floor to visualise the pattern and colour distribution. Determine joint spacing in advance, typically between 5mm and 20mm depending on the desired finish.
Step 3: Apply Adhesive or Mortar
Use a high-strength stone cladding adhesive or appropriate masonry mortar. Apply the adhesive using a notched trowel to both the wall and the back of each stone (back-buttering) to ensure full coverage and a secure bond.
Step 4: Fix the Stone Slips
Press each stone firmly into position, ensuring good contact with the substrate. Check alignment regularly using a spirit level and use spacers if consistent joint widths are required.
Step 5: Cutting to Fit
Where necessary, cut stones to size using a tile cutter or angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves.
Step 6: Pointing the Joints
Once the adhesive has set, fill the joints with suitable mortar or grout. Finish the joints neatly using a pointing tool to achieve the desired appearance.
Step 7: Finishing and Sealing
Remove any excess mortar or dust from the surface. If recommended for your specific stone type, apply a suitable stone sealer to enhance durability and protect against moisture and staining.

Traditional Cosy Farmhouse Look and Feel
Create a traditional farmhouse look and feel with stone slips, bringing warmth, texture, and rustic character to your home. Their authentic tones and uneven surfaces replicate classic stone walling, adding timeless charm to kitchens, fireplaces, and exterior façades while maintaining a practical, lightweight installation.
What are stone slips?
Stone slips are thin slices of natural stone (typically around 20–40mm thick) designed to replicate the look of full stone walling. They are fixed to an existing wall using adhesive, creating an authentic stone finish without the depth and weight of solid stone.
Are stone slips the same as stone cladding?
Stone slips are a type of stone cladding. “Stone cladding” is the broader term for stone used as a non-structural facing, while “stone slips” usually refers to thinner, cut pieces of natural stone installed as a facing on walls.
Can stone slips be used outside?
Yes. Stone slips are suitable for exterior use when installed correctly on an appropriate substrate with the right adhesive system and weatherproof detailing. Exterior installations should be carried out to manufacturer guidance to ensure long-term durability.
Can stone slips be used indoors?
Yes. Stone slips are widely used indoors for feature walls, fireplaces and chimney breasts, hallway statements, and commercial interiors. They provide a natural texture and depth that’s difficult to achieve with alternative wall finishes.
What surfaces can stone slips be fixed to?
Stone slips can be installed on properly prepared masonry, concrete, cement board, and suitable render systems. The surface must be clean, stable, and capable of supporting the weight of the stone. For some backgrounds, priming or a bonding coat may be required.
Do stone slips need pointing?
Many stone slip installations are pointed to replicate traditional stone walling and help weatherproof exterior applications. Some styles can be dry-stacked (without visible mortar joints), but this depends on the product type, edge finish, and whether the application is internal or external.
Are stone slips hard to install?
Stone slips are generally simpler to install than full stone because they are lighter and do not require structural masonry construction. However, correct preparation, adhesive selection, and setting out are important for a professional finish—especially on exterior walls.
Do stone slips need sealing?
Some natural stones benefit from sealing, particularly in high-traffic interior areas or where staining may occur (e.g., kitchens). Exterior sealing depends on the stone type, finish, and exposure. Your supplier should advise based on the specific product.
Are stone slips suitable for fireplaces?
Yes, stone slips are commonly used for fireplace surrounds and feature walls. Heat suitability depends on the stone type and the installation system used, so it’s best to follow product guidance and keep slips outside direct flame zones.
What’s the difference between stone slips and manufactured stone veneer?
Natural stone slips are cut from genuine stone, offering true texture, colour variation, and long-term durability. Manufactured stone veneer is typically moulded or cast to imitate stone, often with more uniform colour and less natural variation. Natural Stone Slips are more durable and longer lasting.
How much do stone slips cost per square metre?
Coverage varies by stone type and format. As a guide, most stone slips are sold per m², and you should allow extra for cutting and wastage—typically around 5–10% depending on layout and complexity. Prices typically start from £60 per sqm and can go upto £120 per sqm.
Can I order samples of stone slips?
Yes. Ordering samples is recommended to check colour, texture, and finish in natural light and alongside other materials. Samples help ensure the chosen stone works with the overall design before ordering full quantities. Stone slip samples can be ordered on the product page of each cladding product.
