What Are Brick Slips?
Brick slips are thin slices or veneers of brick that replicate the appearance and texture of full-sized bricks. These brick tiles are lightweight pieces made from genuine fired clay or reclaimed bricks, allowing them to retain the authentic finish of traditional brickwork. Brick slips are often used as a cost-effective and practical solution for achieving the aesthetic of brick walls without the bulk and weight of full bricks.
Applications of Brick Slips
Brick slips are highly versatile and suitable for a wide range of interior and exterior applications. Common uses include feature walls, fireplace surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, and exterior façades — offering a timeless, stylish finish in both modern and traditional settings. Their slim profile makes them ideal for areas where full bricks would be too heavy or impractical. Whether used in homes or commercial spaces, brick slips provide the charm of real brickwork with added flexibility and ease of use.
Benefits of Brick Slips
Brick slips offer a smart, stylish solution for achieving the look of traditional brickwork without the weight or complexity of full bricks. Because they are thinner and lighter, brick slips can be easily applied to most surfaces using tile adhesive — ideal for quick transformations in both residential and commercial spaces.
Available in a variety of colours, finishes, and surface textures, brick slip tiles suit a wide range of interior and exterior design styles. Whether you're after a rustic feature wall, a sleek industrial backdrop, or a timeless fireplace surround, they deliver authentic visual impact with ease. Durable, heat-resistant, and easy to install, brick slips are a practical, space-saving alternative to traditional bricks — perfect for modern renovations and heritage-inspired projects alike.

Reclaimed Brick Slips vs New Brick Slips
When choosing between reclaimed brick slips and new brick slips, it's essential to understand the differences in terms of appearance, cost, durability, and environmental impact. Both options offer unique benefits, but the right choice depends on your project’s specific needs and design preferences.
1. Aesthetic Appeal and Authenticity
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: One of the biggest advantages of reclaimed brick slips is their genuine, weathered appearance. These bricks showcase rounded edges, natural colour variation, and textures shaped by decades of exposure. The variation in hues and natural imperfections in reclaimed bricks give them a unique character that new bricks can’t replicate. This timeworn aesthetic adds a level of depth and authenticity — making reclaimed brick slips ideal for rustic, vintage, or period-style spaces where heritage charm is a key design feature.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips, while often made to mimic the look of reclaimed bricks, tend to have a more uniform and consistent appearance. Modern manufacturing techniques can replicate aged textures and colours, but they may lack the true patina and variation found in reclaimed bricks. New brick slips are ideal for projects where you want a cleaner, more contemporary look with consistent colouring and texture.
2. Environmental Impact
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips are one of the most sustainable choices available. They are salvaged from old buildings and reused, giving each brick a second life while reducing the demand for new raw materials. By avoiding new manufacturing, reclaimed brick slips help lower embodied carbon and reduce the energy, water, and waste typically involved in brick production. They’re an ideal solution for environmentally conscious projects and are often favoured in builds targeting BREEAM or low-carbon credentials.
- New Brick Slips: While new brick slips are often made with sustainable practices, they still require raw materials and energy to produce. Manufacturing new bricks can have a higher carbon footprint compared to using reclaimed materials. However, new brick slips are typically designed to meet modern building standards and environmental regulations, ensuring they are safe and sustainable.
3. Cost and Availability
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips tend to be more expensive than new ones, primarily due to the labour-intensive process of salvaging, cleaning, and cutting each brick into slips. They can also be more difficult to source in large quantities, and availability may vary by region. Prices may fluctuate depending on the rarity or historical significance of the bricks, but the authentic character they offer is often considered worth the investment.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are typically more affordable and readily available. Manufacturers produce them in large quantities, so there’s usually a wide range of consistent styles and colours to choose from. This makes new brick slips a more budget-friendly option, particularly for larger projects or designs where uniformity in tone and texture is preferred.
4. Durability and Performance
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips are generally very durable and offer similar performance to new bricks, especially if the original bricks were made from high-quality materials. However, the wear and tear on reclaimed bricks may affect their strength in some cases. It’s essential to ensure that reclaimed bricks are in good condition before using them as slips. Reclaimed brick slips may also be more porous than new ones, potentially requiring sealing or additional treatment to protect against moisture and staining. When properly selected and installed, reclaimed slips offer excellent long-term performance.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are typically more uniform in composition, and many are treated to offer better resistance to water, stains, and weathering. They are often manufactured with modern techniques that ensure consistent quality and durability. New bricks may also be made with improved materials that provide superior performance in areas exposed to harsh weather conditions.
5. Suitability for Specific Projects
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips are ideal for heritage restoration projects, renovations, or any design where you want to match the character of existing architecture. They are particularly well-suited for feature walls, fireplaces, or period property restorations. Their historic charm can add a sense of authenticity and timelessness to a project.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are versatile and suitable for both traditional and modern designs, and
Ideal for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and exposed outdoor settings. They are commonly used in contemporary spaces, where consistency and uniformity are desired. New brick slips are also a great option for new-builds or areas where the focus is on clean lines and modern design, such as kitchen backsplashes or commercial applications.
Conclusion
Both reclaimed and new brick slips offer distinct advantages, depending on your project’s goals. If you’re seeking authentic character, heritage appeal, and sustainable materials, reclaimed brick slips are an ideal choice. For projects that require consistency, affordability, and modern performance, new brick slips may be more suitable. By understanding the differences between the two, you can make a confident decision based on your design priorities, budget, and long-term requirements.
