What Are Brick Slips?
Brick slips are thin slices or veneers of brick that replicate the appearance and texture of full-sized bricks. These thin, lightweight pieces are made from genuine fired clay or reclaimed bricks, allowing them to maintain the authentic look and feel of traditional brickwork. Brick slips are often used as a cost-effective and practical solution for achieving the aesthetic of brick walls without the bulk and weight of full bricks.
Applications of Brick Slips
Brick slips are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, both interior and exterior. They are commonly used for feature walls, fireplaces, backsplashes, and facades, offering a timeless and stylish look. Due to their thin profile, brick slips are also ideal for spaces where traditional brick walls would be too heavy or impractical. They are popular in both residential and commercial settings, allowing you to achieve the charm of traditional brickwork with ease.
Benefits of Brick Slips
One of the main advantages of brick slips is their ease of installation. Because they are thinner and lighter than full bricks, they can be applied to most surfaces with adhesive, similar to installing tiles. Brick slips also offer a range of colours, textures, and finishes, making them suitable for various design styles, from rustic and industrial to contemporary. Their durability and authenticity make them a popular choice for creating a classic, natural brick aesthetic in any space.

Reclaimed Brick Slips vs New Brick Slips
When choosing between reclaimed brick slips and new brick slips, it's essential to understand the differences in terms of appearance, cost, durability, and environmental impact. Both options offer unique benefits, but the right choice depends on your project’s specific needs and design preferences.
1. Aesthetic Appeal and Authenticity
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: One of the most significant advantages of reclaimed brick slips is their authentic, weathered appearance. These bricks have a timeworn look, often with rounded edges, varied colours, and distinctive textures due to years of exposure to the elements. If you’re aiming for a rustic or vintage aesthetic, reclaimed brick slips are perfect for achieving that authentic, old-world charm. The variation in hues and natural imperfections in reclaimed bricks give them a unique character that new bricks can’t replicate.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips, while often made to mimic the look of reclaimed bricks, tend to have a more uniform and consistent appearance. Modern manufacturing techniques can replicate aged textures and colours, but they may lack the true patina and variation found in reclaimed bricks. New brick slips are ideal for projects where you want a cleaner, more contemporary look with consistent colouring and texture.
2. Environmental Impact
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed bricks are an eco-friendly option, as they are salvaged from old buildings and structures, giving them a second life and reducing the need for new materials. Using reclaimed brick slips helps preserve historical architecture and reduces the environmental impact associated with brick production, including energy consumption and waste.
- New Brick Slips: While new brick slips are often made with sustainable practices, they still require raw materials and energy to produce. Manufacturing new bricks can have a higher carbon footprint compared to using reclaimed materials. However, new brick slips are typically designed to meet modern building standards and environmental regulations, ensuring they are safe and sustainable.
3. Cost and Availability
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips tend to be more expensive than new ones, primarily due to the labour-intensive process of salvaging, cleaning, and cutting the bricks into slips. They can also be more difficult to find, especially in large quantities, and availability may vary based on location. The price can also fluctuate depending on the rarity of the bricks or the historical significance of the source material.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are typically more affordable and readily available. Manufacturers produce them in large quantities, so there’s usually a wide range of options to choose from. This makes new brick slips a more budget-friendly choice, especially for larger projects or where consistency in colour and texture is important.
4. Durability and Performance
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips are generally very durable and offer similar performance to new bricks, especially if the original bricks were made from high-quality materials. However, the wear and tear on reclaimed bricks may affect their strength in some cases. It’s essential to ensure that reclaimed bricks are in good condition before using them as slips. Reclaimed brick slips may also be more porous than new ones, potentially requiring sealing or additional treatment to protect against moisture and staining.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are typically more uniform in composition, and many are treated to offer better resistance to water, stains, and weathering. They are often manufactured with modern techniques that ensure consistent quality and durability. New bricks may also be made with improved materials that provide superior performance in areas exposed to harsh weather conditions.
5. Suitability for Specific Projects
- Reclaimed Brick Slips: Reclaimed brick slips are ideal for heritage restoration projects, renovations, or any design where you want to match the character of existing architecture. They are particularly well-suited for feature walls, fireplaces, or period property restorations. Their historic charm can add a sense of authenticity and timelessness to a project.
- New Brick Slips: New brick slips are versatile and suitable for both traditional and modern designs. They are commonly used in contemporary spaces, where consistency and uniformity are desired. New brick slips are also a great option for new-builds or areas where the focus is on clean lines and modern design, such as kitchen backsplashes or commercial applications.
Conclusion
Both reclaimed brick slips and new brick slips offer unique advantages depending on your project requirements. If you are looking for authenticity, character, and environmental sustainability, reclaimed brick slips are the perfect choice. On the other hand, if you require consistency, cost-effectiveness, and modern durability, new brick slips may be a better option. Understanding these differences will help you make an informed decision based on aesthetic preferences, budget, and project specifications.
