Reclaimed Brick Slips in an Award-Winning Garden Design
This project showcases how reclaimed brick slips can be used effectively within an outdoor environment, forming part of an award-winning show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Used to create a naturalistic brick wall within the “Enchanted Rain Garden,” the brick slips were selected to reflect the character and texture of traditional reclaimed brickwork. The aim was to introduce a sense of age and authenticity into a contemporary garden design, helping the structure feel established within its surroundings.
Designed by Landscape Architect Bea Tann in collaboration with GK Wilson Landscaping, the garden draws inspiration from rain-fed woodland environments, particularly those found in northern UK cities. The planting scheme features dense, moisture-loving greenery, with layered textures that respond to rainfall and seasonal variation.
Within this setting, the reclaimed brick slip wall acts as both a structural and visual element, complementing natural materials such as stone planters and moss-covered surfaces. The use of reclaimed-style materials reinforces the overall design narrative, allowing the built elements to sit comfortably alongside the planting and landscaping.
Reclaimed brick slips are particularly well suited to outdoor applications such as garden walls, where durability and visual character are equally important. Their weathered appearance helps them integrate naturally into external environments, making them an ideal choice for landscape design projects that aim to balance structure with organic form.
The completed garden was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, reflecting the strength of both its design and execution. This project highlights how brick slips can be used beyond interior applications, playing a key role in outdoor spaces where texture, tone and material authenticity are essential.
